It will be the alternator belt that is loose and squealing. Easy to tighten up.

I recently had my Alternator Belt changed as it was getting a bit dry and made rubbing noises on startup.
Problem sorted

What Polo is it, they vary between models etc ? Changing the belt on a Mk 2/3 is pretty easy, as it just a V belt on two pullies. The belt is usually about £3.
The newer ones like Josh's will be a ribbed belt around various pullies for power steering, air con, alternator etc.

if the alternator belt fails... is that all that goes? the battery charging capability? or does anything else use that belt? (ignoring the risk of it getting caught in the cambelt, sprokets etc)
Mine's looking somewhat frayed (hopefully *thats* the cause of the turbo-vacuum-cleaner noise on revving) but I dunno how bad it should look before it goes *ping*

I've got a 6n 1.6, the belt in question should turn the alternator, water pump & possibly the power steering (can't remember). If it looks worn best to get it checked.

mmmm, hard to tell if it's relevant comparison then, what with it being a 1990 1-litre lump after all
