Speakers dead on one side

Hi,
First post so please bear with me!
I've got a year 2000 polo (6N2 I therefore I think) 3 dr, where the driver's side speakers (only got front ones) have stopped working.
I've taken out the head unit and swapped the left and right to check it was the speakers. Having read this forum a bit, I think that the signal to the main door speaker runs through the tweeter...can anyone confirm if this is correct?
If this is a the case...is it likely that just the tweeter is gone rather then both speakers?
If it's just the tweeter, I'd be tempted to head down to the scrappy and try and pick up a replacement, otherwise I'll have to replace both sides.
On a related note...can someone explain how to take the door trim off to get access to the speakers?
Thanks
