Rear Nearside Passenger Door Won't Open On 2003 Polo

In the past couple of weeks my rear passenger door has failed to open when using either the inner or outer door handles. I've pulled back part of the door panel and can see that when you pull the inner door handle the mechanism is activating the latch end of the door but it won't open. When you turn the key in the front doors you can hear the motors in the rest of the doors but not the rear one. Does this therefore mean that the wiring has perhaps broken or could it be a solenoid ? Any help provided will be appreciated.

If it has locked - and the child proof function has not been switched on, the first pull of the interior handle (if the dead locking is disabled) should raise the lock button - then the second should open the door - I take it that this is not happening.

When you pull up the inner handle the lock button raises but won't stay up. Instead it just goes straight back down. When it initially started playing up you could pull the inner and outer handles at the same time and the door would open. However, after a few goes at this the door stopped opening altogether. As mentioned, when you put the key in the front doors and turn it you can hear the mechanism working on all doors with the exception of the nearside rear door. This is why I thought it may be the wiring or fuse but I've checked these and they are both OK.
