Advice needed.

Hey everyone, new to the forum. Tomorrow it looks likely I'll be buying a 1998 Polo 1.4 3door, and the dealer is asking £1500 for it. Is it just me or is that a tad overpriced? I'm not sure of the model since it doesn't say on it, but I think it's an L or a CL. It's got about 70,000 on the clock. It's got a tiny little dent in the roof, and also the engine sounds a bit rough when it's fired up but it cleared up quickly. I suspect the oil pump might be gone, any thoughts?
Also is there anything else I should be suspicious of while checking it over before handing over the cash? I'm aware of the electric window fault but not of any others.
Thanks in advance,
Rob.

Firstly, welcome to the Forum!

Hope you can find all the answers you'll ever need!
Secondly, personally I would be inclined to look around a bit more, £1500 doesn't sound too bad, but if you suspect it is dodgy already then walk away now. Plenty of really good motors around though for the money you're spending, I got my '95 1.3CL for 1100 quid with full dealer history & sub 50k on the clock, so look around & don't rush into it.
VW's are great cars if they are looked after.
Look at the buyers guide at the top of the mkIV list (its pinned)
Welcome Again!

check the arches for rust, quite common problem, and yea most polo mk4's i kno seem to start rough but smooth out after a little bit.
and yea windows as you said, check for any touch ups aswell, heard a few incidents where the cars been half arsed painted.
and have a better look at this dent on the roof, any worse it could technically write-off the car, shouldnt be tht bad if a fore courts selling it.
and haggle lol id be looking at around £900 - £1200 max for it,
i got my 1.0L 3Dr with mint bodywork and a new basic exhaust system for £1000

It's not that I'm suspicious of the car so much as suspicious of all car dealers in general
I'll try and get it for about £1200 then (= I checked, double, then triple checked the rear arches on the Polo haha, I'm paranoid about rust. Just had to consign my first car, a Rover Metro, to the great showroom in the sky, due to excessive corrosion (mostly anyway

).
The dint in the roof is only about 3mm max and not very deep, and the paintwork isn't damaged. The only thing I'm bothered about is the tailgate was up, a sign the car may have been smoked in =( Ah well. Discount almighty.
And I can't afford to look around haha, I spent the day trawling forecourts because I need a car by tomorrow haha. The Polo looked by far the best option, 10 months T+T on it, low mileage, good nick, and the only other choice I had was a Toyota Corolla that looked like an ex-minicab and the dealer looked like Phil Mitchell, and a Ford Fiesta with barely any T+T. And I like Polo's ^-^.

Bright red =) looks like it's been well polished, the shine off it was excellent. I'm aiming for about £1000-£1200 for it I think

ace.

Most issues have already been mentioned so as long as you covered those then I can't think why not to get it! If the dent is small then you could probably get it sorted at a dent puller for about £30 and as long as the paint isn't faded (a common issue with the red is oxidation) then you're onto a winner!
I got my 1.4CL for £750 but that was friends rate
P.S - Red ones go faster

Oh heck! I'm in for a shock on test drive tomorrow then

My last car was a 1.1 Rover Metro, four speed. 60 horses when new, probably down to 40 in the 16 years it was on the road. Prodding the accelerator generally led to a lot of noise and about 4mph extra, as lawnmowers and turtles zoomed past it.
The colour hasn't faded at all on this one, looks like it was sprayed yesterday not 10 years ago. Or maybe it was sprayed yesterday

haha.
