Engine Warning Light 1.0L 2000 polo

Hi,

A week ago the engine warning light came on in my polo. It came on soon after refuelling and other than a slight judder in 3rd/4th gear there is no noticable change with the car, the light is on the majority of the time but now and then will turn off after a judder.
I took it to a local garage for a diagnostic test and it came out that the presure in the fuel system is too high and the engine is running too rich?
The guy at the garage said that there is a variety of jobs he could do on the car but none were guaranteed to sort the problem as it is a trial and error scenario??
Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so could you please advise of any resolution?

Andrew
