Hi,
I have a 53 plate Polo twist, it went into SKF Bury for an Mot today and they have informed me that the headlights need adjusting at a cost of over £50.00, also that they may need replacing if they cannot be adjusted. They also stated that this is quite common, replacement that is!

My qustion is, is it quite common?

They also told me two tyres need replacing, one a rear one on a car thats done 27,000 miles, the tyres have not been swapped back to front. Rears last 45,000-50,000 on my Octavia vRS.

I have called VW customer care to lodge a formal complaint, because if it is quite common there is something seriously wrong, I cannot think of any other car that needs its headlights replaced after 5 years. The car has never had a bump, never even been through a car wash.

I have also called the SKF dealer in Bolton where I ordered a brand new Polo yesterday and told them if it was the case I would be canceling my order. I think the salesman was quited shocked to here what SKF Bury were doing.

I had that problem with my B5 Passat when it went into the VW dealers for its second or third MOT. It hurt to the tune of £300+!!! It seems that the adjusters are steel but not very well corrosion protected, add to this the fact that the plastic worm wheel bit is bonded (moulded) on to a knurled section of this adjuster rod. Now factor in the fact that this rod passes through a (maybe small) hole in the housing and that salt can attack the surface at this position. Next comes the really stupid bit, VW dealer techs, with all their experience, now, when it comes to moving this rod, instead of checking that it is free to move - and easing it with something (because by now they have seen quite a few - surely?!), give it a quick rough big tweak to turn it and shear the bond between the steel rod and the plastic worm wheel - bingo - emergant work means extra money "KERJING" (money makes the world go round - give us your money). I was gutted, as my car had Xenons fitted at the factory, getting a head empty headlight assembly took a couple or more days - then all the bits needs transferring over. Probably VW has changed nothing in the intervening 4 years. I told them to place the old headlight assembly in the boot as I was not going to let VW off with that - well I'm sorry to say I just got lazy, holiday time appeared and it was all forgotten about - such is life!!
