Exhaust repair advice

I need some exhaust repair advice. Basically the pipe has cracked and is hanging where it enters the back box (from the front of the car), any advice on how to repair this?
Or can I completely just remove the backbox, as I know by law you don't need a silencer on cars as long as its not to noisy, but I'm not sure if it applies to the back box.
