Yes they do have codes. If you disconnect the radio, it will go into 'SAFE' mode requiring a code.

On my car when I plug it back in, it goes on without a code. I'm not sure if this is a setting under VAG-COM, but don't risk it. I'm sure you could find out from VW. OR it could be a stting under the menu, but all risky if you don't have the code indoors.

right to activate the code you have to enter it from new thats the only way its activated, best way to do it is VW have a big list of which code gos with which car so you give them your reg and they give you the code but you generally have to go in with your documents to prove the cars yours

:D

hope thats some help

p.s never heard VW charge for the code either

the vw headunits are coded inot the ecu. we haven't got the code for our gamma one as our car was a demo, and they upgraded it from a beta version.

when u diconnect the battery, then reconnect it, the radio goes inot safe mode for a minute or so, then retrived the code from the ecu of the car.

Cheers,Matt
