i have thought bout this , but i think only the tweaters need upgrading to be honest, the rear ones are a pain as you got to remove the whole panel i think!

I would imagine 6.5" but don't know myself.
What's your price range for upgrades?

Would you be looking at amping them? Personally I'd look to get a quality pair for the front, and leave the rears out. Better to have sweet speakers up front and nothing in the rear, than average all round. if your splashing out look at a set of Hertz or maybe Rainbows, if your not looking to spend that much you can't go wrong with Alpine. The Type Rs are good all rounders, they do like to be amped thouh.

I wouldn't know how to go about sorting out Bose equipment, without contacting them directly. My dads got a setup in his Romeo 147, it's pretty nice but nothing you couldn't achieve with a nice set of amped conponents in the front.
ie. something like these:

its 17cm's all round you need mk4 golf adaptor pods for the fonts, but none on the rear.
the front speakers are riveted in. you won't be able to run a bose system as it uses a special lead form audi. i suppose you could try and splice the looms together.
other than that you could use a line out converter to run the amps off the oem head unit.
