the thing is, all polo's sit high up, so regardless if you have a 15 inch wheel or a 17 inch wheel its going to look high,
lowering the car is not expensive or the end of the world, if anything its a good thing

realistically a 17 inch wheel sits and looks best on the car for the size of the platform and arch size
and your tires should be 205x40x17
my wheels are 7.5j in width, and id recommend going no wider than an 8j wheel
and if you dont want issues with rubbing, you need a wheel as close to the stock offset as possible which is et 38, anything from et 40 - et 35 whould be ok,
my old wheels were still only a 7.5j wheel x 17 inch, but an et 32 offset and rubbed on the outsides of the arch on bumps and caught the inside arch on full lock, so just shows what difference 6mm makes
heres a pic of my wheels fitted to my lowered gti

the 18" were ok not too much issues with rubbing but looked too big and handles crap! 17" best by far!!
