Hi all.

I'm currently running steelies that I painted black and stuck some center caps on earlier in the year. However, I didn't really know what I was up to and they don't look particuarally good.

Here's a picture of them atm:

This is how I'd like to make them look(sorry for the poor picture):

Basically, I'd like to know what prep I'd need to do, what paint to use, whether I'd use a brush to paint the lip bit silver etc.
Also, whats the best way to paint the center caps black but not paint the very center of them (the vw logo)?

Cheers,
Dan

Your looking at primer, gloss black paint, and laquer. All spray. first two can be obtained from Halfords, laquer maybe not so, not certain on what to buy here though.

Sand the whole area down and make sure it's clean, get 3-4 coats of primer down, followed by a good 3-4 layer of gloss paint. Followed by 2-3 THICK (but not runnny) layers of laquer.

Sand down using 1200 grit wet paper in between coats. Every other in the early stages.

What Tim suggested, but the more laquer the better so the more coats you can afford to do the better in the long run maintenance wise.

Also take the tires off when you work on this, advantage with taking the tires off as well is your able to see if there's any corrosion which you could also take care of by yourself, it also allows an easier job of painting the lip.

One warning though, do NOT use chrome paint if you plan on masking tapping it to paint the lip, reason being is chrome paint reacts with the laquar and you end up with a grey colour,
