Been meaning to ask about this for a while now but not got around to it. Have the day off this Friday so will be able to look at it then.

When I start the engine up, there is a weird noise comes from the back of the car and stays there for a couple of minutes or so (stationary and moving) then disappears for the rest of the journey.

At first I thought it might be something to do with wheel bearings or something but got a mate to look while I started up and he laughed at me like I was some kind of worthless freak and told me it was my exhaust vibrating and the same had apparently happened to his car.

He said something like the heat shield or something like that (??) may have come down a bit so it's vibrating against that when I start the car.

Anyone have any experience of this and know what to do? My mate said he just "shoved it all back" but I don't know if there's an actual way of doing it.

Well, if it truely is the heatshield which came off/let loose (which is indeed so in many cases!) he's correct in just shoving it back up. The heatshield is just thin sheetmetal, which is kept in place by some little clamps. So just push the heatshield bak up, get the clamp-thingies firm against it, maybe even get some new ones from your local VW-dealer and it shouldn't hit the exhaust anymore

Ah sounds easy then... Just hope the car doesn't fall off the jack and crush my already shovel-hitten face while I'm doing it.

Just jack the car up, and support it with some logs of wood of something, works perfect if you don't have a garage of special jack-stands to your disposal.
