When im driving my 6N in any gear, there seems to be a slight whirling sound coming from the left hand side of engine, where gearbox/clutch is. As soon as I take it out of gear and clutch is disengaged it is silent and as I put it back in gear, as if im slowing down, I notice the noise again. Any ideas on what it could be?

Nope release bearing is when the clutch is up. And would come from behind the pedals. It sounds like your gearbox mate.

Yeah I did think it was the gear box but thanks anyway lol! Might jusy be easier and cheaper to see if I can buy one rather than getting it reconditioned. Cheers for your help fellas.

Right. I have got a quote of around £600 for a reconditioned gearbox. Does anyone know of places where you may get them cheaper? It does have upgraded pinions and bearings.

Ahh right. I might just pop down to vw tomorrow and ask them if they can have a look. Im pretty much sure that it is the gear box though. Just cause it only does make the noise when in gear. If I take it out of gear and coast for a second it goes away.

Well it is deffently the gearbox. Had it looked at today and a test drive and the vw mechanic said it is the main pinion bearing. Cheapest quote I have had is £500 including fitting. Anyone know of any cheaper?

Well it is booked in now and is costing me £380 with free fitting and a 2 year warranty. Gonna get my clutch replaced as well seeing as it will be easier to do when the gear box is off.

who are you doing it with jezza? and where?
as posted earlier mine is acting funny on a 1.4 tdi, but still hadn't had it properly checked.
for people around london, i found these people
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Goldings-garage ..based in dartford.. vag gearbox specialist.. you can either pick up one of their rebuilt one ..or get yours rebuilt on the day if you show up early in the morning.. for a 1.4 tdi i got quoted £350 rebuild and fitting..petrol ones tend to be more expensive though..
