Hello all.

Just thought I'd introduce myself, names Nigel....obviously.

I drive an older BMW 5 series estate, nothing flashy, the 518 iSE.

My eldest daughter has just turned 17, and I'm looking to get het first car soon, and anyone in the know keeps pointing towards these little vw polo's

My wife had a polo as her first car, a 1983 A redg jobby.

Nice low mileage on that one but depends on your budget....there is scope to squeeze a little more for your money but it depends on what you're going for. ie low insurance group/engine size/car age etc.
Ebay is often a good place to get an idea of what you can expect to get for your money.

I'm just looking around really, although I think my mind is made up, she's having a polo !

She doesn't mind, she just wants a little car to learn on.

A 1.0 litre would be ideal, we don't care how many doors it has, I don't care about colour....obviously she does , but as I'm buying it...it doesn't matter.

Spec doesn't matter, but it must be standard, insurance is a pain in the arse for kids, I've managed to get her a quote of less than £500 TPFT

I love some of the modded ones I see with the young lads around where I live, they take great care and really look after their cars, but on a provisional licence, with zippo no claims, its out of the question.

I've found the price varies greatly, there are people advertising cars about the same as the one I posted the link to, they want anything up to £500 more.

im 16 and i said i was 17 to get a quote a 1.0L 98 6n Polo is about £74 a month and a 1.4 SE 16v is £89 month this is my insurance but my dad as a named driver you can get it lower than this if u shop around, so they is only like £15 in it and mine will be more because off im a lad.
And a 1.4 is about the same to buy as a 1.0L because of 1.0L are a lot harder to get hold off

As you've already found out, there are a lot of cars out in Autotrader-land & beyond! Do your research & trawl through the classifieds, on ebay & the autotrader website & get a 'feel' for what you can get for your money.

Go & see a couple, plus drive one or 2. And try both the 1.0 & 1.4. Most popular is 1.4CL as it gives you the 'mod-cons' of electric windows & mirrors, & airbags!

If you need more advice or help, just put a post up & someone will be sure to know the answer! The model you will ultimately be looking at for the money is the mk4, or 6n, built between '94 & '98

Oh, & nearly forgot, look in the mk4 forum on the main page & you'll find a common faults guide, a buyers guide & an intro to the model too.

where abouts do u live then?

i personally would get the 1.4 16v but as a first car i think the 1.48v version would be good.

my mum has a 1.3 mk4 and i find it quite slow at picking up speed and driving and i have a 1 litre mk5 and altho the engine is smaller it seems to pick up speed quicker and is nice to drive.

I'll be keeping a look out for the next couple of weeks, we've only just sent to dvla for her licence, so no panick.

I live in Worcester, in answer to that question.

I'll check the insurance on the 1.3 & 1.4 litre models and see what difference it makes

The MK4 Polo is a really robust little car; much nicer than any French cars of the same age.

I think you've made a good choice!

The 1.4 8v has enough torque to make it fun to drive, while not being too "fast" for a new driver... If you get one in as good condition as you can find in a colour she likes, it's a car she could keep for a few years.

i have a nice little 1.0 mk4 back home (not with me at uni - if only....) most people hear 1.0 and assume it's a gutless piece of trash, but i find mine actually has a fair bit of get-up-and-go about it. 10 years old, and i can still outpace several newer cars. it's also very economical on petrol. i average 40 mpg in mine, and i have a genetic problem known as intermittent leadfoot....runs in the family! very good, reliable car to run.
insurance isn't so good, but thats due to young age and the fact im male. girls will always get sweeter deals.

I back you up 100% on that. Mines only 1.0L for low insurance, i also avarage good mpg on the motorway. I'ts not that guttless.. obviously is no GTI, beats all 1.2 16v corsa's C's ive come across, until the top end. Damn 16v. I find the car very nippy. The 1.3 version only has 5 bhp more. so..

If i never end up buying mark 1 golf gti next year then the next dub along is another mark 4 polo, but a 1.4 or a 1.6 16v

id actually love to import a 6n gti if i can ever find one! or just nick the engine and interior out of one.... maybe a long term project for your daughter if she keeps it long enough?
