The Facts

- Airbags can give you smooth ride at stupidly low heights, as the bags allow for movement
- For purposes of passing MOTs, a pro fitted system complies with all regulations.
- There are some insurance companies that cater for bagged cars - Norwich Union, CIC and HIC are the top 3 to try.
- Airbags have been used on coaches and HGVs for years
- The hoses used can withstand 5000psi of pressure, your tyres can do between 35-50psi
- Hydraulics give bigger drops and rises, but affect handling more
- The more pumps you have, the quicker your car will hop. a single pump system will allow you to Pancake (ful height to full drop in one go, or vice-versa), for Dancing or Hopping, you'll need a for pump system.

How Much Will It Cost?

You can get air bags to do the basic up and down motion for a Mk4 Polo for £950!!!! (fitted).

A Nitrogen charged system, which will enable you to Front-to-back-side-to-side, will cost £2000 fitted.

A hydraulic system for Pancaking starts from £1800 fitted, and a FBSS system is £2000

Just digging it up again -

It IS the trend now, for sure!

Besides German Airride Systems (GAS) there is also a company in the Netherlands selling the kits now ( www.luchtvering.info ) for a cool € 2000. That price includes VAT but not the fitting, for which they charge another € 300. The bags use Koni shocks and the ride is apparently even better than that of the GAS system.

There are at least two dubs here that have it installed now, it's Marcel Klok's VR6 (PVW Feature car) and Emiel Kooistra (ditto). Only complaint so far is the drop up front, the shocks are a bit long, meaning it won't drop as far as they'd like. It'll get sorted out soon though...

The Gold Mk4 at VW Mania (see the post in the Club House) had airride too, but I only saw him raise the front (even when he should've raised the rear to clear a curb) - this let me to believe that he may not have had a working 4-corners kit installed... Another Mk4 (16v) out of Austria is fitting the full kit too, I'll ask Tom what he thinks of it when it's done.

Nice stuff!
