Fitting a sub - 2001 GTi

Hi all,

I've just changed my 106 for a 2001 5-door GTi. So far it's loads of fun and much better than the 106.

Anyway, all the stereo is in - nice JVC head unit, Parrot bluetooth phone system etc... (I'd like to change the speakers, but not sure if I'll bother) but I definitely want to get the sub in. The kit I've got is a 1000w FLI which in the previous cars I've had it in has always sounded great. Anyway, I went to fit it today but came across two problems...

1) Previously, I've always just run the red power lead for the sub in to the engine bay and rigged it up on the battery directly. But on the Polo, it has this extra bit on top of the battery with already 3 connections... I've never seen anything like it before, so I'm a bit intrigued... question is, where would I attach the power lead - port 3 is currently not in use (although I don't have the little bar in place which would connect the actual wire to the main circuit on this thing. So advice: where could/should I attach the cable? Do I run the risk of knackering any electrics... like losing immobiliser/CL codes or anything like that if I detach the battery?

2) This arguably should have been the first question, but, I'm really struggling to find a place where I can actually run the power cable in to the engine bay - there's so much sound proofing and I simply can't find a good place to run the cable in. Anyone know where there's a good hole to get it through? Or if this isn't what you do... what should i do?

Hi mate, First off, the fuses on top of the bat dont worry about, undo the 10mm bolt at the Live terminal and connect the power lead to that, i will get a pic up for you,

As for running the wire, there is a gromet behind the dash on the drivers side, just run it through there, but again i'll try and get a pic when light.

You have to take off some of the dash underneath to get at it tho, just fet a bit of welding rod and tape up the wire and poke it through.

yeah that is what I did. Took a little bit of time to get the wire in the grommet and pull it through, but managed it in the end. The way I did it was start from the battery then feed it through.

I found the grommet - only problem is the rubber grommet pinged out of the hole and I can't find it! If I don't run the cable through something, 'm guessing there's a big risk of water getting in?

Wehre abouts is this grommet you've found?

Is it quite low down on the passengers side? If it is your in trouble, it's a waste line for the air con unit and it'll floor your footwell.

You should use this one here:

It can be reached by putting your hand far up behind the glove box.

Yeh, that's the one I used. Had to dismantle most of the driver's side dash to get to it. Couldn't get my hands in there, poked it out of the hole with a long screwdriver. Was thinking about trying to gaffer it, not sure how possible that is tho if I can't get my hands in!

Although suppose if I can get a replacement grommet, that'd be the best way, it's in for a service on Thursday so might ask them to sort it when it's up on the ramp etc.

Anyway thanks for your help - I had seen that one when hunting, but useful to know it was a good one to use!

Yeh definitely get a replacement grommet sorted out. You don't want any kind of water issues, not mater how unlikely they are.

Fortunately, the pedal box has been done already, but you're right, no sense tempting fate.

haha, erm not a lot... got sidetracked on another issue! was just pleased when i looked through the logbook today and saw it had been done!
