I've got my new '99 Polo 1.4cl due for a service tomorrow.. Got two new front tyres today..

Two problems...

1. The steering is 'knocking' when the wheel is turned, you can feel it at low speed in the pedals and in the steering wheel itself.. my tracking and alignment on the tyres were done today.. so it can't be either of those..

2. When stationary, and the wheel is turned even slightly, it make the engine lose revs (from c. 950 to about c.850)... this doesn't make the car stall (as of yet, but it doesn't like it.

3. When idling (sometimes) the engine hunts for revs and drops about the same rate as the steering makes it (950 to 850 revs). I've read that the throttle body may be the issue so I'll clean that myself if the full service doesn't sort the problem out.

Any ideas?

The rev issue can be searched in the mk4 section as, "erratic revs issue".

As for the steering knock, does it still knock if you adjust the steering height to another level?

Ah! Can't say I've tested that... thanks.. I'll adjust the steering column tomorrow and let you know! Otherwise.. is the power steering pump failing or something?

Could be throttle body, but there is a good chance it could be your alternator is worn out. The exact same problem happened to my GTI a few weeks ago, and a new alternator fixed it.

not an expert by any means on any of this.... but could it be the bearing that the wheel turns on being out of shape, damaged or just undergreased?? maybe a problem with the driveshaft. as said before, dont take my word as read, just sounds like a logical problem.....

The alternator could be one of the many suspects but i'm not sure the car would hunt for revs when idle if the alternator was faulty.

Well.. moving the steering column down has fixed the knocking!

My garage has said that the reason the car loses revs when moving the steering wheel when stationary is because the power steering is drawing the power from the engine.. normal on most older cars.

Also found out the car has been decatted.. have new bushed and front wishbone, and is in good shape! A £250 service including all plugs, fluids, cambelt and a new clutch cable (the only little problem) should get the car in excellent shape!

So coming into this situation on a negative note resulted in good news Why couldn't life be more like this

Just got a full service (plugs, coolant, oil + filter, air filter), a new cam belt and tensioner (old one was ready for snapping, and a new clutch cable for £200.
