Hello everybody. I just bought an Mk5 Polo 1.4 TDI. It looks and drives the part, but it will not down shift from 5th to 4th when driving.
I can take it out of 5th, back into 3rd and then into 4th.
No other noises, no clunking, no rattling with other gears but its like it hits a wall when down-shifting into 4th.
These gearboxes have been reported to have problems....but am I looking at a new one?..or is there hope to fix something about it without major works?
Thanks.

It could be your gearbox, but it's unlikely as your having no other issues, with engagement and noises?

It's most likely to be your gear linkage. Pop off the gaitor (it's just plastic clipped in) and it will expose it.

The linkage uses a series of springs and pivots to select each gear, have a play round with the stick to see how it works. If it's the linkage (which it most likely is ) you should be able to visually see the problem.

Hope this helps.
