Have taken mine apart but there seems to be a flap mechanism that is built into the intake tract on the underside of the engine cover/airbox feed. Anyone know what this is, is it important can it be removed without issue ???

How did you get it off in the first place?
and what engine is it?

Just pulled the engine cover off, there is a pipe on the right hand side that slides on and off, breather basically.

Its a 1.4 100 sport petrol if it makes any difference ?

That flap with its actuator rod etc will be the cold air divertor flap, you would have noticed that there were two points where air is allowed into this aircleaner housing, one at the front(side) via a "horn" - ie ambient air pick up and one from below (front) that picks up from on top of the hot air shroud covering the exhaust manu-cat - ie pre heated cold air pick up.

If VAG thinks it needs it then I'd leave well alone!

Cheers for that. How the hell does it work then ?? There is no electrical connection to give anything power for it to change direction or alter angle etc ?? Just intrigued now that i might have broken something

I'd guess that its got a bi-metallic strip or something else, so it senses the current ambient air temperature and moves the flap to pick up hot air (when the temperature is low) and cold air when the temperature is hot. This idea has been around for a very long time and seems to work! Some of them might even have a vacumm sensor so that they only pick up hot air when its cold and at low throttle openings.
