Im a MK4 Golf owner, but my workmate just rang me, and as he's slightly consfused to how these "forum things" work, i thought id post this for him.

He told me that his 97 1.9D has been idling at 1100rpm... i told him to blip the throttle, as mine sometimes does that too, but will idle at around 8-900rpm. No joy... he's just wondering on what the manufacturers speed is? Apparantly his Haynes manual is conflicting with his VW Handbook. He gets the thing looked at via an independant place, so would like to know before he books it in.

Any ideas?

id say 8-900 but if its higher then it could be the idle control valve

Tell him to get some 10K boost for dervs, it costs £25 and all you do is remove the air filter and spray it in to the air intake.
This cleans all the injectors and internals out, worth spending before going to a garage, this worked for my 1.3 petrol engine

Idle at cold is 1100 rpm, when it warms up it will drop to 900rpm.
