Just had my Car diagnosed by VW in Pensarn today and had it confirmed that my Cam Belt Tensioners have failed. I was fortunate in one respect because once the VW technician heared the car he refused to re-start in case of serious damage. The problem came about on Thursday night, I had been out in the car and when I got back the car sounded really rough, very much like a diesel. I have to admit I had been driving the car faster than I normally would, I dont mean I was reving the car high and going through the gears quickly, I was just in 5th gear on the A55 going "fast enough".

The car has just come back from the Garage on the Tuesday after needing some welding to the front exhasut bracket so I wasnt too pleased to hear another concerning noise. Anyway I started the Gti on Friday morning and it sounded terrible, it could of easily been mistake as a TDI, it was that bad. As I drove the car into work which is about a 10 mile trip there was a really loud whining noise which sounded like a high pitched gearbox whine but this was coming from the engine and not the box. Anyway I got the car home and didnt use it again until this morning, but its bad news as expected.

£390 including VAT from Volkswagen which isnt Horrific but its money I could of done without spending. Its still on the Original Gearbox so I imagine that will be next to go lol

ill post a progress thread soon because I dont think I have uploaded any pics of my car yet, I just spend £300 on getting the bumpers smoothed so it looks alot better than it did.

Oooff £390 is a bit dear for that work!! Did you get the belt tensioner and water pump all done then? i would hope so for that price.

Well to be honest Tim I dont know myself whats been done as of yet. It is having a service as well which is included in that price but I would like to think that the belt tensioner and water pump were both done.

I wont see the car until tommorow now so I will get a more in depth description of exactly whats been done from the workshop lads. I didnt exactly have the chance to shop around unfortunaetly so I think ill just have to dig deep for this one

What's the mileage on the car? Was it on the original cambelt/tensioners?

The Mileage is 57,435 and I believe it was on the original cambelt/tensioners.

It has got a full VW Service History but there was no record of the Cambelt being changed other than a simple tick on one of the service sheets but its not listed on any of the paperwork.

£390.00 in total and that includes Cambelt change, Tensioner Repair Kit and a new Water Pump. They also serviced the car with an Oil Change & Filter.

Just picked it back up this afternoon and its running sweet as a nut now. Costly Job though, most of which was Labour.
They also said I need new rear pads & discs and quoted me £157.40 but I will be doing that myself.

Oh and the Car is still on its Original Gearbox but I hope to get another 15,000 miles out of it, the gearbox is great at the moment.

Glad you got the water pump and tensioner done, would've been a waste otherwise!!

£140+ for brake pads is insane. You could do it yourself with £35 pads, a £15 caliper rewind tool and a few other household tools.
