Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 (I think!) because I'm on the longlife service plan. Although I won't do more than 8,000 before the 2 years are up and it needs servicing again

Yeah 5w30. I think its just this engine that uses lots of oil. I am all ways topping mine up. I check it every two weeks and have to add a little

If you put a thicker oil in you may well notice a decrease in oil consumption but you may very well reduce the life of your engine! New engines are built to tighter tolerances, which means they're quiter, more efficient and last longer, but need thinner oils.

Oh well, its going to have to be 10w40 for the next 5,000 miles. Will put 5w30 in on the next oil change.
Anyone know if the 10w40 makes a difference to the engine?
Rang VW and they said I should be using 0w30 as it’s on a Long Life Service Plan.
