Need to service my girlfriends 2001 1.4 8v Match soon

Book says 501 01? Are we talking 10w-40 like the Castrol Magnatec or 5w-30 like the Castrol Edge? A little confused as to what I need as the 501.01 thing is never mentioned anywhere!

I seem to remember the VW dealers was cheaper than Halfrauds last time I had to do this, is this the case?

Go with 10w/40. I was going to get Magnatec for mine but was advised against it by GSF. i went TItan XTR in the end, runs great. And was under £20 for 5l from GSF.

5L tim isnt it lol :P

I think GSF recommended the fully synthetic 0w/40 for you didnt they tim?

I changed the oil in mine earlier. Castrol Magnatec 10W/40 as I fancied using a premium oil to allow for longer time between changes. Its running sweet as a nut, and cost me less than retail due to trade woo!

It can be run on 0w40. I researched it earlier lol but once you change to fully synth you have to stay there, and its expensive!

Yeh that's what I've always thought, it's really not that expensive actually. The stuff they recommended (can't remember what it was now) was £19 for 5l.

Mobil Super S 10w 40 £19 ish from Halfrauds might just get that, or maybe £25 for the 10w 40 Castrol Magnatec. Not feeling the £40+ for the fully synthetic Castrol Edge stuff, unless its actually needed!

Might just pop in to VW & ask them for prices as GSF is miles away from me!

VW is well overpriced for oil lol. GSF sell Fuchs Titan XTR 10w40 for 15 quid a bottle and its great stuff. You only need the top quality (inc fully synthetic) on something like a GTI.

GSF deliver, fast also. So travel isn't an issue. You can get your oil filter from them also.

Right. Had a look in today at the filter. How the hell do you get the tool on/ turn it to release the filter when its in such a s**t place, surrounded by other things? Normally I put the filter removal tool on the base of the filter and turn, but poxy VW have put it in a place that you cant do this!

Is it ok to put a socket on the end of it (on that big nut) and apply pressure to undo it? I tried this but it was done up pretty tight and was scared of breaking it!

It's quite safe to use a socket on that nut, in fact that's what it is intended for. I only buy filters with that nut on - makes life so much easier! The torque setting is 14lbs by the way.

I tried undoing it with a socket and was propper tight. I then put a long bar on the socket for more leverage but was a little scared to put too much pressure on it for the reasons above! Im sure these are supposed to be done up hand tight! Whoever put mine on was using a little more than that to tighten it

I cant risk kanckering it as I the girlfriend needs the car everyday so I don't want to force it and wreck it. Why cant they just put it in a place thats easy to get to like on all other cars Ive had

It turns to left - i hope your turning it that way :P

If it really wont budge, you may need a proper filter wrench on it for removal
