Spare Key-Help!

Hi,
I have been a complete fool and manage to lose the spare key to my friends Polo. It is currently in for some paintwork, so the bodyshop has a key, but I have lost the one he gave me. Are the keys coded and if so, presumably I have to take the remaining one to VW?? Or can I get a blank from VW and get it cut?
Can anyone help at all?
Thanks
Peter

yea i think after 1996 that they use transponders in the keys, (some chip with a unique code).
Techincally you are meant to have to go to a dealer to get one ordered but i have seen key cutting shops popping up signs saying they now do transponder keys.
if you go to a dealer expect to pay lots
there is one (key cutter near the oval (station) in london (i think)

Many thanks for the replies so far.
The place near the Oval sounds ideal as that is not far from me, if anyone knows a name that would be even better.
Thanks again for your help.

I was £50 for a new key when my one was faulty, that was from a VW dealer. Hope that helps!

if it was made after 10/99 you can programme the key yourself, but if it was made before then its a VW job.
If its got buttons on the fob then its post 10/99. If not, then its VW.

i think it was next door to the oval station, i might be wrong but it was a station near the oval.
or ask vw to do one but they might ask for proof of ownership for the car

i needed a spare key for my polo but it came with central locking and alarm so i had to get it from VW, it cost me £107 they re-tuned all the other keys and gave me a new key for that price.
