the other day my mk4 suddenly decided it didnt want to go into reverse and i havnt been able to engage reverse since. i tried forcing it and it feels as if it goes into reverse gear (sort of, but not quite) but when i lift the clucth the car moves forward!

i have the car up on ramps now so has anybody experienced this before? what should i be looking for?

I had this over a year ago, when i put it in revers it still went forward, issue is with the gearbox. I got my mechanic to contact VW who faxed him the blueprint and he took it apart, turns out it was this nylon string item inside the gearbox that came loose. However it was not labelled at all on the blue print, and VW had no clue what he was on about. So he cable tied the part down and refitted the gearbox, and it worked like a charm with no problems.

If your mechanic knows what he is doing he could do what mine did (providing the price is not steep), as my mechanic did it for free whilst replacing my clutch. Alternative is another gearbox.
