gearbox oil level checking! mk4/5

After changing my green temperature sensor today i was peering about and noticed what appears to be the gearbox oil filler... is this where I check the level from aswell?
I'm a little bit worried cause i found it without the plug in
like you see in the 2nd photo, (but i probably knocked it whilst changing the temp sensor)
can anyone help?
