Just wanted to know what are the prices around for reconning your gearbox including the fitting.
A VW specialist are charging me about £800. Dont know if thats reasonable?..

Definately not reasonable. I've read somewhere on here that a VW dealer charged someone £1200 for a brand new box and fitting etc.
£800 is a rip off.
My gearbox recon is booked in for next Tuesday at a VAG gearbox/engine specialist in Cumbria, only costing me £400 including VAT! I know a few folk who have gone there too, and said the work is top notch.
Like Tim said in your other topic you should be expecting to pay between £400-£500. Maybe the fact you live darn sarf is why the prices are more expensive? God knows.

is that for repairing your original gearbox and not to replace it with another one?..
ive been calling up places they asking for 600 supply and fit, however they dont seem to know what kind of service im after, i was saying i wanted my box reconned , and they said yeah we wil supply you with 1 and said all the boxes are reconned and started asking what litre my car was. So by the sounds of things their, it seems like they are looking to put a 1.6 polo gearbox in and thats something i really want to AVOID!.

The £400 is to take the 'box out, fully rebuild, fit clutch and put everything back in the car. Simple as.
Just ring round and ask for a recon/rebuild on your gearbox not for then to supply another box - That's maybe why the price is so high.

Must just not be ringing the right places mate.
It's a given that most places only reconditioned boxes and just want to swap them, but they are places out there that will do yours.
Are theere no local forums to you that you can ask around for recommended places?

hey tim, yeah i called one place and they have said £645 at the very most if its a really bad gearbox or £300+ . However i havent heard much about these guys.
The place i have been recommended to is this current place that i am talking about the 1 charging about £770. However this isnt the final price and they will call me back on tuesday when it will be looked at, as my car is left their because i cant risk driving back 25miles back home. So hopefully their estimate is way lower and the problem aint as bad.
If not then i might just have to take the risk of taking it somewhere 10miles away and getting it done their if they are so up tight and want to rip me off!

£528 mine cost me. that was rebuilt by one bloke, new clutch, and then re-fiiting the gearbox.......... but we took the gearbox out ourselves

just cost me £485 for GRS to rebuild my gearbox and replace a few dodgy bearings. My car was off the road for 2 days
They did a cracking job imo.

at least you know how to get 1 out lol, im not sure how much they will charge me for looking at the gearbox if i dont take on their price, then after it will probably work out the same if i get it done somewhere else and pay them for looking at my box
