Hi I live in New zealand & have just bought my first VW Polo 1.6 8v auto with about 80K on the clock. I knew nothing about VWs when I bought it & having always had jap cars I thought the mileage wouldnt be a problem as I think the car was well maintained by previous owners, anyway I took it to my local garage for cambelt, water pump change & full service the works he even drained the brakes & replaced the front disc rotors. The car is really nice to drive only problem now is the passenger door lock is broken the drivers side central locking works fine, there is an annoying squeaking noise coming from the boot and it seems to use a lot of fuel I only get about 260 miles to a tank is this normal for this car? Anyone help with fixing the door lock and boot noise? Thanks :)

I have a 1.6 8v manual and i only get, when driving normal, 350miles at the most. If i drive and put my foot down everywhere i only get around the 260 mark.

an auto box is always going to destroy your mpg, so i wouldn't expect much more than that really. the only way you're going to get a decent mpg is with very frugal driving, which essentially means driving like a granny. and no one likes that.

If you can stick some shell v-power in there. I find that using that fuel increases my mpg. More expesive but it is good to use everynow and then to clean your fuel system through.
