Exhaust Emissions Light

So, off I went shopping yesterday, everything fine, pulled out of the carpark and then after about a minute the light came on, just during normal town driving.

Got annoyed, so just carefully got home and then checked the manual, its a constant light, and book says may be lambda probe, have had a search around on here and its been a wide variety of things.

One of the threads had some conflicting information about if the light resets after 5 restarts of the car, and, guess what, it has now gone out, but I am certain I've only started the car 4 times. So, does anybody have any information for definite about if the light goes off itself.

And, to stop my paranoia, is there anyone down near Bristol by me that would be willing to run vag-com, my local garage are really good, but still I cant help thinking I may be paying over the odds for what may turn out to be a cheap sensor just for their time to check, will chuck some money your way, well, that is if people think its worthwhile now the light has gone out?

On a side note, the car has always run perfectly, and hasnt changed in anyway, thats why this light confused the hell outta me.

Cheers, Ed

Bump my own thread as this has started again, went through MOT fine since the original post, but the light comes on every now and again, possible its dirty sensor?
If it is a sensor, any tips on finding it, and how to clean it. Guessing it may be a lambda sensor, accessible by me find an wire brush? Or that a no-no?

Ed!

NO NO NO!!! do not wirebrush your lambda sensor! the Tip of the lambda is VERY VERY sensitive! if it is your lambda sensor kaput then you'll need a new one, best bet is to get VAG COM on it matey, but like you say, all it will be is astupid sensor which VW's are prone for

Haha! Cheers for the reply mate!
Think I'll get vagcom off eBay as I'm sure I'll need it in the future again!
I'll stay away from the wire brush then :(

Also worth checking the cables back from the sensor, they are very prone to breaking, especially after gearbox work.
