Heater problem

Hi. My '97 Polo has a recalcitrant heater control knob which only recognises one position - full on. It cannot be moved off this setting. What is involved in gaining access to this control, and sorting it, and has anyone else had this problem? In the middle of an Australian summer, it gets just a bit too warm.... Thanks - in anticipation.

Probably the cable operating the heat flap has come adrift. You will need to remove the centre console and then the centre of the dashboard. It is probable that the cable is no longer attached to the heater controls - that is the clamp is broken. This means new controls or a jerry built attachment method. You might be lucky and the sprng clamp has dislodged. Some things to note - it is possible that the plastic of the centre dash panel is brittle and can break easily. You will need to take out the radio and remove the top centre vents to get access to two screws. These screws will be tight be careful you don 't strip the heads! :D :D Have fun

Hi dtulloh. Thanks for your response. I finally got into the panel, I found the cables were fine. The problem proved to be with the bevel gear set which control the lever which pulls the cable.... so I did have lots of fun! The VW dealer said I needed to replace the whole panel as you could not pull it apart. Well, you can pull it apart - carefully! I was able to remove the bevel gear set, re-seat everything which had magically popped out of position, and it is now working perfectly.
