just a quickie, my gti's on the longlife service plan so the intervals are 20k or 2 years, it had the first service in june 2008 at 17k (2 years old), the next one due now according to vw is either at 37k or june 2010. is anyone else on this plan? the car's on 26k now and im thinking of getting the service done as i'm not overly convinced by 20,000 miles without a service? if i took the car to vw how much should i be expecting for the second service?

longlife is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too thin to be using on a gti, and 20k miles on a turbo engine between servicing is just asking for it to give up

mine was on this plan for 6k miles, then i had it converted to normal time and distance oil at awesome gti as i just could not trust it any longer, and has been done every 6k since

to be fair i know f**k all about this kinda thing, just seemed alot of time / miles between services! i'm gunna be getting the services done at vw anyway, i wanna try and keep all the history main dealer, should i ask to be put on a different plan and have a different oil used or just keep an eye on miles / age myself? i was thinking every 10k or a year, or is this still too much?

Here in Australia our recommended service intervals are every 15000kms and I know that most of the crew that have their GTI chipped change their oil even more regularly for piece of mind.

mine was changed to this when it came out, so service every 10,000 or 1 year

i also have a in-betweeny every 5k for oil and filter!

Do they change your oil every year?

I had a service in November and the little oil change box isn't ticked even though it was £130 from Volkswagen.

That would mean my oil hasn't been checked or anything since I bought it last April.

use fully synthetic oil that is recommended for the car and you won't go far wrong especially if done through V.W if the turbo goes which I doubt it would if driven correctly and allowed time to cool down after been driven hard then long life is the dogs b*******s.Changing t oil too often is expensive and unnecessary to say the leas. OILS have come a long way in the last decade buy cheap get crap and problems , buy quiality well do I need to spell this out? I don't think so gents.

The fact the box isn't ticked would be the big clue here my friend long life means at least 20k. I drive a 1.4tdi and can get 34k between services, down to sensible driving and I don't drive slowly , making sure that the oil is topped up in saying that it doesn't use oil, if I have had a long hard drive sitting 90mph plus one the motorways I will sit and wait a few minutes to let the car cool down before switching off to protect the turbo.

I'd still go with the majority here and change the oil every 12 months/10,000 miles. Longlife servicing with a petrol engine seems to mean 15,000 miles (on my experience and car usage). Oil is the life blood of an engine (along with quality fuel). Longlife Servicing was originally roll out by VAG in demonstrate their commitment to reduce customer's running costs, this is a good idea in theory but the small print provided by VAG advises against it in certain circumstances - and this normally equates to typical "small car " usage - and Polo/Ibiza/Fabia are just that "small cars" built for short commuter running. If the OP was smart, he could just quietly get a VAG indie to change oil and filter every 12 months - or half "his normal period", idealy using the correct "Longlife Service" VAG oil. As said though, the best way to approach this is to request, when the next "half longlife period" is up, that the VAG garage change that car to fixed time/milage FOC and to use a VAG oil that fits in with that servicing type - which should be cheaper in materials per oil change, but over time be dearer on labour and parts. VAG are not stupid, this "Longlife Servicing" really only suits high annual milage cars - ie company cars - and that is where their main business thrust is aimed - and it suits these customers perfectly - ie less time off the road, only thing is that these types of customers do not pay for their own cars and seldom keep them for more than 3 years. Most people on these car forums are owner drivers and might just want a few more years out of their cars - so I'd stick with fixed time/mileage servicing if you are in that group. I tend to keep my cars for about 10 years from new, cover about 10,000 miles per year and always change the oil every year or 10,000 miles. This annoys VW while the cars are under warranty as the special oils they use do not start to do their "scrub up and clean up routine" until just the few days before the service warning comes on - THIS IS A PILE OF DEALERS POO TALK! I got given that story at service reception twice (different cars) within 3 years - at least they stick to their story, the complex oil molecules change at that time - aye right!

I change my oil and oil filter every 6 months, which works out to be around 6 -7K miles. If you want your car to last and run well then i guess this is what you need to do Every 20K is wayyyyyyyy too much IMO!!! thats also the plan i am on! Well meant to be!

same ere i change every 5000 miles oil and filter use 5w30 fully synthetic and e genuine oil filter! Also i recommend the ecs magnet drain plug!
