I've still got problems with my radio reception, I've tried 2 head units and bought a booster/amplifier for it, but it's still no better. So I've decided to take things to bits.

The reception is the same with or without the aerial and base being connected so there's something wrong there.

Anybody know what the wire with the green tape around it is or what it's used for? It looks like it's connected to the main wire going to the head unit.



Should there be an earthing point for the aerial anywhere?
Any info, ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

After much playing about I've still got nowhere.

I've cleaned the underside of my roof where the base bolts in to give a good earth, if this is where its taken from.

If i touch the inner wire of the aerial cable I can get perfect reception, but when it's linked up to the aerial its crap. I've tried touching another car aerial & wire to the threads in the base when its connected- good reception, but putting the standard antenna in its crap again.

Does anybody know anything about this subject? It's bugging the hell out of me.

I've found the same with mine - the receprion is bad compared to other cars. Haven't got to the bottom of it either...

The worst thing is the 'TP' function on the Gamma.

It's makes the radio cut in and out and I can't turn the poxy thing off

To turn TP off, just press the FM button once!

SteveB... What MK of Polo is yours? If it's "MK5" (6n2) can you give me the part number for that antenna base please as I need a new one (if you can see one!)...

If not, just around the very base is a rubber surround. Does this look like it could be replaced? (mine has perished a little).

Isn't the whole tp thing in the instruction manual. Had the same problem with my gf's stereo in her lupo. Think like Josh said you have to press fm to turn it off and then save the station as a preset station again for it to stay permanently off when you select it. this has been some time since i've done this as we replace the stereo about 8 months ago.

It's a Mk4. Might be the same but I've put it back on now. The rubber seal comes off, so could be replaced.

Wasn't very difficult to remove the base. It' tells you in Haynes manual. Just remove the top part of the rubber seal around the boot, pull down plastic panel on roof (feels like you're gonna brake it), then pull down some of the roof lining, disconnect wire, undo nut and you're there!


The metal/plastic connector in the picture has a pin inside which (I guess) is meant to make a connection inside the other clip (in car). Upon poking some strands of wire down the hole it goes into, the pin doesn't appear long enough... So I packed a few (about 5) strands as far into hole as possible. This has helped to make a better connection. In some places my head unit will autotune to all the stations it should , but it still isn't that great.

Similar problems, wish I could figure it out. Used to get schweeet reception but recently it's been bobbins. Sometimes all I can get is radio 2 with a very crackly signal.

Trying to inspect my own aerial wiring is a pain in the arse and useless as it's in such a naff place, and disappears into the gaffer taped main loom.

any updates on the reception problem,mines the same.i have noticed there is a cylinder tpe thing on the arial conection that goes in the head unit.is this some kind of amplifier,any ideas
