Im putting a turbo into my car soon and looking at getting a lower compression in my engine before i start. Does anyone know if a 1.8 head from any ibiza or golf's would fit? Im thinking it would cause of the size of the 1.6 engine will be a little too small.

forged pistons is the way i'd recommend if your serious, spec them up to the 1.4 ones and bobs your uncle, well kinda...
Most modern turbos have high compression ratio's so it depends on what kind of power you want to generate, either way changing the head is a no-no as far as I am aware with the 1.6 to a 1.8 (could be wrong). You really need to think about the crank, rods, pistons and rings. You can get the rods rings and pistons of the 1.4 8v but your power output will be limited to 0.5bar (7psi) unless you go for forged which will set you back around the £900 mark but the boost will be more like 1.5bar+ (21psi+). Then you need to account for bay tempertures as you going to have high internal tempertures, so insulating components and possibly an external cold feed is advisable, intercooler possibly, but if your aiming for the 7psi mark i see no point as you'll loose 1-2psi on the intercooler.
As for turbos a good starting point is keep your current manifolds, remove the rust spray them with some thermal paint (providing you use the 1.4 pistons) slam a mini metro turbo in as all you'll need is a flange and a pipe adapter followed by some basic welding pipe work if this is a DIY project (mini metro turbo is small, quick spool, very responsive and designed for 6-7psi, plus easy to adjust manually), if your more serious a k03 is the way to go if thinking forged. k03 root is complicated due to the standard sensor cant read above 9psi, do not quote me on the exact figure as its been a while since i did any turbo related reading or polo thinking/research.
You will also need some g40 injectors and a few other g40 bits, you can even apparently use the g40 ecu as that had an on board sensor or something... Best thing to do is get a book, do alot of formulee and then apply it to different variations of yr ideas.

Great that is a help to me. Do you think it would be better getting hold of a 1.8 golf engine? Or maybe the 1.6 16v polo engine?

1.8T is a very good engine, highly tunable too (best one is the AGU of the golf), just the polo sucks in terms of handling thats the only real let down long term. Whilst the VVT 1.6 16v gti engine is good for its use, but its limited to tuning, not as much power involved as the 1.8t either. So if you are thinking of abit more speed the 1.6 if you are looking for long term project and alot of power go for the 1.8T hands down.
I believe the 1.8t is also hard to fit on the front axle but I imagine its worthwhile.
