Brake upgrade options

Hi, I have 1.9 diesel Polo 6N, 3 door. The brakes are terrible and i think I should be looking at upgrading them, before I end up in a ditch. I don't want to spend much, but could i fit slightly larger discs without changing the calipers? Or should I buy drilled/grooved discs?
Oh and can someone tell me what size my standard discs are?
Thanks

Just get factory sized upgrades with a decent set of pads. get grooved OR drilled discs as there's no need for combi's for this size of car with such less power. You'd also save on the cash that way.

Looks like a good set of pads can make a big difference, so I'll start with that and a change of the brake fluid. Looks I'd never fit larger brakes under my 13 inch wheels anyway
