Hi All, Owned my Gti for about a 6 weeks now, loving it apart:

At 70 mph its doing 4000 revs, it has had its gearbox changed may 2008, it obviously ruins the fuel economy and the noise.......

Id be grateful if anyone has an idea of how i can fix this or what to do about it, cheers (Y)

I assume thats 4000RPM@7-MPH in 5th?

It should be about 4000RPM@85... it has been known for people to end up with the wrong ratio gearbox fitted....

sorry yeah thats right in 5th 70mph= 4000 revs, any ideas on what i could do about it ... ?

jeez, my 1.4 6n2 16v does about 3k in 5th at 70mph iirc

ye mines about 3000rpm at 70 mph in 5th.

only thing they are missing a 6th

Looks like you are going to have to see if you can find another box from a GTI!


Before you fit it, check the gear ratios just to make sure it is "as it should be"!



This has to be the main reason why I suggest people get their own box rebuilt rather than getting a recon one from an unknown car.....there are several identical looking boxes with totally different ratios...

Yep, sounds like incorrect ratios for sure...

Aii i had mine rebuilt, aswell as having the correct ratios, you still have the GENUINE box in there aswell

Should be around just over 3000 rpm. My new box does around 2700 rpm. Only got 270 miles before the light came on, because I'm having to stay in the lower gears for town driving

did a test in mine last night and yes at 3k mine is doing around 70mph just over

ahhh its going to be a bank buster then... bugger....

OR...you enjoy the shorter ratio! so a faster 0-60!
