Air filter with a good feed, full exhaust system de-catted with a 4-2-1 manifold, and a remap on top your looking around 140bhp?

It's a lot of money for a small gain, the 'box will also recieve a greater amount of strain and everyone knows what they're like

I would suggest that those mods proberably wouldnt push you that high!

The weakness in the AVY engine is the breathing ability of the head...

The intake manifold is a big catch point as is the intake ports...

If I wanted to make more power out of the engine without sticking a turbo/supercharger on it... I would remove the head and fully port and enlarge the airways... I would skim the head gasket to up compression, fit a nice cam and then replace the standard intake with bike injection throttle bodies (so one for each cylinder on the engine)... That coupled to a properly designed exhaust system and a very good map might see 160hp but that is really stretching it...

That lot could be done for around £500 if you do all of the labour yourself! A LOT more if someone else does it for you!

If it wasnt for the cack gearbox I would suggest a small supercharger (like a mini one) .... the engine would love that... the box would not!

This is why people fit the 1.8T engine.... its a big improvement...

Thinking of mods, have you checked with your insurance company? Mine wont allow mods, and those companies that do allow them want to charge silly money!

On the topic of HT leads, its not wise to get any HT leads that arent genuine VW ones. They make no difference, and in fact can decrease performance if they arent original, as 90% of the time the quality of the insides isnt up to the quality of OEM leads.
