New Gearbox is leaking!

Not good. My mum said she spotted oil under my car a couple of weeks ago, but thought it was builders who had parked there a few times. Today I noticed oil under the car so I checked my engine oil and everything was ok. Having a quick look revealed an oil drip around the gearbox.

I drove the car up my homemade ramps to go under to take a look. Basically there is a shaft that moves back and forth on the underside of the car connected to the gearbox - when you move this the gearstick also moves. The hole where this shaft goes into is where the oil seams to be seaping out. Anyone know what parts I'm talking about and if this is an easy fix? I'm gonna try get it to the garage who fitted it asap. I'll have pics up tomorrow.

As of today when the car is in neutral it sounds like a diesel and the noise is coming from the same area. When you put the clutch down the noise stops

Any help is much appreciated :?

The oil leak is a common fault...

Its the selector shaft oil seal... its not too tricky to fix, but if its a new/recon box... I would be taking it back to wheerver it came from...

Get them to look at the noise at the same time

I'll take it to the garage and pretend I don't have any idea. Since they did they work then surely they should fix it under guarantee? If not then possibly the place who supplied my gearbox? It comes with a years warranty. Trouble is I can't take it to them as they are over 500 miles away!

Here are the pics:

Got to wait until Monday now until the garage can check it. What a hassle. The garage opens at 8, is a half hour drive from my house, then to get to my work it takes an hour and I start at 9  I'm assumming it should be ok to drive with a slow leak as I've heard people driving about with gearboxes that had no oil

Deffinately the selector shaft..

As for driving with no oil.... thats a bad idea.... I assume its a very very slow leak, in which case you should have enough to continue driving.... but if it gets too low the box/bearings wont like it atall!

I'm only gonna use the car Weds - Fri to get to work and keep it at home at the weekend. Hopefully not too much will have leaked out. The noise has disappeared too
