Starter motor help required!

Hi guys, new to the site so let me start off by saying hello and i think the site is awesome.
Now, a few months back i bought my polo with a few minor problems, nothing to difficult, its a 97 1.4 and have enjoyed polo ownership until about a fortnight ago when i came to start it and got absolutely nothing. The battery is new so last week i decided to get the starter out to bench test it, i got absolutely no response from it, so was first wondering if i was doing it right, poitive to the bolt negative to the starter body?
Second, can anybody reccommend a source for a second hand starter?
Also, any ideas of little jobs worth doing while everything is stripped down (decided to attack it from the top so the throttle body, inlet manifold and fuel line are all out)
Any feedback would be very much appreciated
