16v Polo?

Firstly, hello to everyone on the site! I'm a noob, currently part of the Honda group and have been for years (currently driving a Civic EK4 vti), but am seriously thinking of going to a VW, specifically a Polo 16v. My main reason is really cheaper running costs, but still keeping some perfomance, and I've wanted one for years!

My main questions are really:

what are they like to run petrol wise? I do a fair amount of miles now (normally around 150-200 miles per week) but still want reasonable economy - obviously I will be saving tax and insurnace for a start compared to the vti.

I'm quite aware of the mechanical issues (as my sister used to own a 1.3 polo a couple years back) but realisticly if kept running well with services etc, will mechanical problems be very expensive?

For a 16v'r, how much roughly will I be looking for one? Are there models facelifted, some with ac or optional extras - or are they all roughly the same?

Sorry if these questions have been covered lots of times, but I'd like to get a good idea of what I'm getting into before going to a polo! I've read the guide on buying a polo, so I'm now more than aware of the issues they can have, but if these questions could be answered it would be much appreciated.

Looking forward to being part of the forum 8)

welcome dude, ya can get polos from any price from couple hundred to over 1500, depends on mileage etc. i have the 1.6 8v and ive done 6000 miles and had it since januray and i put around 35-50 quids worth of petrol in it a week, but then it depends upon how you drive.

parts arent that expensive to be honest, theyre tonnes of extras to them like de-badged grills, alsorts but they are just as cheap as any other car as theyre really popular.

get a polo you wont be disspointed, im getting another and fitting almost everything to it for shows and things amazing what hey look like
:D

Welcome to the site mate.

Yep Polo are good cheap runners, as said you can pick a good valver up for around £1.5k.

Facelift model is the mark 5, which also has a rare version of the 1.4 16v engine. Expect prices for these to start around £2k up & up.

Welcome fella,

I've got a few mates with Civics and have to say 6n Polo 16vs can keep up with the less powerful models. I've raced a few Civic Coupe 1.6's and left them  to say the least. So the power difference isn't too big a deal. You can get more power with the usual engine mods too.

Try looking for one that has been well looked after and a good servie history. Check the common faults thread so you know what to look for. Your sisters polo may not have had some of these issues lol. You can pick them up cheap but a very clean modified example can be around £2k mark.

My 16v was up for sale so feel free to have a look at that thread in the sales section or photography section as there are some changes to it now lol. I'm happy with the reliability now i've spent money on the common problems polo's face. It'll sell if a offer comes along or i'll keep it for another year or so!

A 16v with a reconditioned box is a good bet as the more powerful engine can reap havoc with it lol.
