I need to remove the driver’s interior door panel to get to the lock area - damaged by a would- be car thief – if anyone could give me a detailed procedure.
Thank you
Ray

You can get the door handle and lock off by simply unscrewing the screw found in the doorshut by the handle.
Or if you need to get the door card off, here's a guide:

the window winder has a cover over it. u need to prize this of with some sort of flat screwdriver or something and then theres a screw holding the handle on. undo that and just pull it of. be careful tho it is easy to damage the cover. there might be a better way of doing it tho.

You dont have to prise it off. Simple press the two sides together in the middleish area, and the cover will twist enough for you to get it off with your fingers quite easily

Hi, can help with removing the window winders? I've tried everything including the tips above - I simply can't get the cover off.
My Polo is a 96 Mk III (6N) - I attach a photo of my winder - you can see the damage I've already done to the winder trying to get it off (so to speak).
Any help appreciated, thanks!

My guess was that the mark 4s (yours is a mark 4 technically) work in the same way.
Post your problem in the mark 4 section, maybe there's another trick to it.

Thanks for the reply Tim! Actually, just 30 seconds ago I was told the trick by someone: turn the winder so it's pointing down; pull the thick plastic clip (behind the winder) upwards; handle comes off. It's easy after all.
Next question: the behind the panel there is a foamy sheet that is glued to the door. I need access to the lock (I borked it during the recent cold weather). It seems that I can't remove the sheet without destroying it, does that seem correct? As an aside, what is the sheet for - protection of the moving parts inside the door?

Sound proofing most probably.
Try heating it up with a hairdryer to melt the glue and get it off in one go, then you can glue it back on with some adhesive afterwards.
