Anyone speak German? 150 BHP + 150 MPH 1.4 TDI Audi A2...

Not a Polo, but the A2 shared the same platform. I've been researching tuning the 1.4 TDI to higher levels for a while now...

Can anyone translate from German to English and tell me what this guy's done to get 150 BHP out of the 1.4 TDI? All I can tell is he's used the gearbox and turbo from a 130 BHP Polo

https://www.youtube*.com/watch?v=aA3BvGxl ... re=channel

And what's he done to get the 6 speed unit in?
https://www.youtube*.com/watch?v=3A1DnY31 ... re=channel

Is he still using the stock injectors? I know on a standard 1.4 TDI, the injectors aren't maxed out even when mapped, the pesky little turbo lets it down...the stock clutch is the next weakest link along with the rather short ratio gearbox, making it max out at 115 MPH @ 4k RPM. The 6 speed installed in the A2 lets him do 60 MPH at 1600 RPM in 6th, compared to 2250 RPM in 5th on the standard gearbox.

Any help would be great. I wish I could speak German...
Ash :)

Yeah, the fastest one in the UK was 142 BHP, but that blew up too. I reckon it's due to the flywheel/clutch/gearbox. The 6 speed in the A2 gets rid of that issue and it's still going strong.

Also, found a guy over in Belgium from TDIclub who said he'd build an engine if I pop over and I'm seriously considering doing so in a couple of years. Hopefully it wont end with pop goes the diesel

how much will that cost? surely just get a decent engine?

saying that my polo is faster then a 110 bora

See, that's where it gets complicated...a low milage "decent" (how dare you!) engine like a PD130 (as tempting as a 1.8T is, I wanna keep it diesel) could go for I dunno £800ish dunno whether that includes the gearbox though. Then you need driveshafts and possibly the clocks/ECU.

Then this would cost:
~£200 for 3 PD130 injectors
~£200-300 for PD130 turbo/manifold + another £50 or so to cut and weld shut the 4th runner (4 cyl vs 3 cyl engine)
~£250 for gearbox
Driveshafts, clutch etc, feck knows...say £300

Labour/mapping...?

Altogether anywhere between £1.5 to 2k realistically in both scenarios :(

Then again, I'd like to keep the stock block, can't be bothered with engine swaps and the DVLA. For me, as opposed to having 180ish BHP, it's more about having something unique, and I'm sure a 3 cylinder diesel with 150 BHP would still be quick enough. Lighter than the 1.9 too, so it wouldn't be too far off a mapped PD130

And yeah, had a play with one of those Mk4 Golf GTis theother day...the ones with the NA 2.0l engine that pushes 115 BHP and feck all torque. The owner seemed quite upset when he caught up at the lights

OK the shooping list required to get 150 BHP is:

£200 for 3 x PD130 injectors
£300 for a PD130 turbo + maniford (probably a KP-39 of a Fabia VRS as it spools up better)
PD100 5 speed Gearbox or PD130 6 speed Gearbox: £250 - 400 depending on what box (albeit the PD100 box is only good for ~125 MPH and is less economical)
240mm dual mass flywheel and appropriate clutch: £400ish tops?
Driveshafts depending on the gearbox...£200ish tops?
Valve block from a PD 1.9 TDI....£20 from a scrappie?

£1500 in parts alone, albeit the gearbox/driveshafts/flywheel/clutch would need to be bought anyway for an engine swap. Pay £500 for injectors + turbo or whatever i costs for an engine/clocks/ecu etc. The other £1000 has to be spent either way...

If anyone sees a rear ended Fabia VRS in a scrappie, let me know :D

Well, you don't need to actually swap gearboxes and such. That's for the stage above

To get 130-140 BHP in a reliable fashion, all you need is...

- GT1749VA turbo (from a PD130)
- Front Mounted Intercooler (eg. Forge Motorsport or Ibiza Cupra)
- A GOOD remap (the secret for a good TDI project is your chiptuner, and to spare the clutch some lifetime)
- Good brakes (the stock ones from the 1.4 TDI aren't adequate)
- Good temper (If you believe a 1.4 TDI is an engine able to go 20 miles with the pedal on the ground, think again)

If you'd like a bit of hardcore on that...

- Go for the GT1749VB turbo (from the PD150's and Ibiza Cupra TDI's)
- Reinforced clutch (kevlar sits nice, and dailly driveable)
- Some PD130/PD150 (same ones) injectors
- A GOOD remap (again, the secret for a good TDI project is your chiptuner)
- Good brakes and good temper (these must always ride along if you own a remaped 1.4 TDI and believe it is a Porsche  )

Here in Portugal we had a 1.4 TDI 03' Seat Ibiza with a GT2052V from an Audi A4 2.5 TDI, a 6-speed gearbox from a PD130 Sport, and a kevlar reinforced clutch. The dynos that car made were never released to the "public", but it was known to be well beyond 200 BHP.

Out of an engineering perspective this would be a very interesting and probably very rewarding project to see how much power can be derived from a small volume diesel but for an actuall tuning point of view i cant really see this being worth the effort.
A conversion would be a much more efficient way to increase the power with much more impressive results.
But the tourque figures I guess would be interesting to see.

However its your choice and kudos what ever you do with it.

Tony, got any links to that Portuguese Polo, sounds like an animal. The reason I believe you need a new clutch/gearbox is because the stock clutch doesn't hold up very well at all over 250NM, which can be easily attained with just a remap. Also, I think the stock gearbox has ratios which are way too short. 80 MPH = 3k RPM

CaptainBeyond, yeah an engine swap would be the best route to go in order to get more power but then again I like to have things that are bespoke and unique. I've no idea if I'll even bother to get more power out of this car as I might just trade it in for something else, but then again if I do keep it I'd probably go through the route of tuning my small diesel engine as opposed to dropping a PD130 in :)

why you bother with them? they are probly the WORST EVER vw invented. the most poinless cars EVER.

Nooo....think you misunderstood! Some guy in his so called "GTI" decided to play with me when I was minding my own business. Guess who won

And yeah I agree with you completely...they don't deserve the GTI badge.

i had simular experience tonight with some blonde fitty, i was tempted to let her in but decided not too
the 2.0 is like a sdi not gti lol why did they bring out one to sell along side the 1.8t? stupidity.

and we've gone off topic again

Haha, don't worry about the off topic stuff :D

Speaking of "GTIs" not deserving their badges, if I ever get round to having some major work done under the bonnet, I'd be quite tempted to stick a 1.2 or SDI badge on for a laugh

1.2 or SDI is different to putting a W12 18.3L Turbo 300V
