alternator curiosity... ???

my alternator has gone on my polo gti but i have a spare one from my old 1 litre engine would they be a straight swap ?????

no, there a different rating, think the 1.0 is about 70amps where as the polo gti is around 90amps

Spot on James. 70 on the 1.0 and 90 on the GTI and certain TDIs
It is vital you fit the correct alternator, as otherwise you will end up with endless problems, underpower (or over power) and potential damage to engine electrics.
