Are there any sat nav units that can be used in the polo from any other VAG car? Apart from the crappy one that was an optional extra for the Polo.

Yes the Mk4 Golf ones or similar. They're called MFD nav's and the best ones are MFD version G because they have postcode entry etc.

Is the MFD D abit crappy that came in the mk4 Golf? If the MFD D doesn't use post code entry, what do you enter?
Does anybody know if these are simply plug and play and whether or not they sit flush with the rest of the centre console...?
