Check Engine warning light help needed.

Hi,

I'm really hoping you can give me a bit of advice. The check engine warning light came on last night. I turned the car off and on a few times over the course of the night to see if it would turn off eventually. But it remained on. I then cleared the warning light by resetting the computer. I did this because I reckoned that if it was a realy error it would light up again. I then took it for a drive for a few miles and so far the warning light has remained off. Should I still go and see a mechanic or would you say it was a false alarm?

The engine coolant was a little low when I checked it this morning, could a coolant level sensor have caused the warning light?

Also just incase this helps, when I turn the ignition key to the position just before ignition, all the warning lights come on and then turn off except the Check Engine light, EPC light, Battery light and hadbrake warning light. Is this an indication anything is wrong?

All of this information may be on the owners manual but sadly I didn't get one with the car. I'm currently hunting for one in scrap yards and on the net.

Thank you for any help your can provide.

Details of the car.
Model 6N2
1.0l model
Year 2001
41000 miles

It could be anything..... do you have access to VAG-COM to run a scan and find the fault code? Perhaps put your location in your profile!??!!

I have this occasionally on my 6N2 GTI, the fault is a dodgy O2 sensor in my case... but it could be anything, and without the fault code, you will find it hard to figure it out!

Will the error code still be present after I've cleared the warning light by removing the battery though?

I'm heading up to a garage this morning to get some G12 coolant so I'll ask them to check it with the VAG-COM if it will still be there. I'm afraid I'm accross the water in Co. Waterford, Ireland.
