Considering an engine transplant for a Polo and have several engines to consider.

1) 1.4 16v
2)1.8T 20V
3) g60
4) g40

I am a newbie but could someone tell me which would be the better one and is the 1.8T 20v the same engine Seat put in their Leon CUPRA r??

If you are a 1.3 mk4 owner, then the choice would be the G40 as the mounts and wiring are similar and it won't require too much modification.

All the others listed would make the conversion very expensive indeed, and would be tricky to do.

There is little point in buyng the 1.4 16v as a conversion. It would be more cost effective to go and a buy a 16V. then you wont have the hassle.

Cool. So a G40 would be the choice if looking for the cheapest implant. Problem though is finding the donor. Is there any particular place where i could find the g40 engine.????

I mean its probably a lot easier to find the 1.8T than the g40 engine and from reading through this forum i take it is veryexpensive to do this conversion successfully. i'd probablybe cheeky if i were to ask if ne one out there has the plans for the wiring on a 1.8 T conversion on the mk4 polo???????????

The G40 would be good, but then again, the 1.8T would be amazing!

The G40 is old, the G60 is old and very expensive, the 1.4 16v isn't worth it, so you're left with the 1.8T.

JBS charge about 7 grand for the conversion... So consider this: You can pick up a used Ibiza Cupra (1.8T) for about that kind of money.

Hmmm

The Mk4 1.8 T is the trendy thing to do if you're in Germany. I've actually seen people saying they're bored of 'em. Whatever. If you keep the styling modest, it's the ultimate sleeper. You'll surprise a lot of folks with that combo...

Hi mate,

If you do decide to go for the 20vT and convert it yourself, make sure you get a '99 spec engine - otherwise the hassle involved in fitting it isnt worth it. Also try and get as much of the donor car as you can - fuel pump, mounts, gearbox etc... as this will also make things easier.

Dubsport will supply and fit a 180hp motor for £6000

However - after trying a 20vT conversion (and failing miserably) heres how my spec list is shaping up.

1 x Polo 1.3cl
1 x G40 Block with no charger
1 x Roth Motorsport Turbo Conversion kit including K03 turbo, manifold, dump valve and downpipe.

After mild tweaking and boost increase i should be looking at 150hp - but still retaining the original handling of the car.

Will be starting the conversion when it gets a bit warmer so i'll let you know how it goes.

hope that helps

right chaps I'm half way fitting a 98 golf gti 1.8T in my mk4 polo heres a
shopping list. When getting your engine get as much as you can your going to need the complete engine and ancillaries, engine wiring loom, ECU dont worry too much about the gearbox mk 3 golf gearboxes will fit with a little modification and these gearboxes allow you to use the standrd cable clutch and cable gear shift mech. If you want to keep the engine as standard as possible it is important to get the ignition barrell, ecu and clocks from the same car this can overcome any immobiliser problems however if you cant Revo can disarm the immobilser and allow you to switch betweem 150bhp to a tasty 209bhp whenever you require it using a hand held computer. Ive made custom engine mounts however 1.9 diesel engine mounts may fit. If you need any help give us a shout this conversion is the best way of getting the maximum bhp from a VAG engne. G40 engines are few and far between and are unreliable whilst the vr6 unit is too heavy and can cause understeer when hammered. :D

Engine is in place and the original polo wiring loom is slowly but surely getting there I Have all the wiring out of the golf GTi as I need the OBD diagnostic port and I am using the golf ECU. Im waitng for the Forge front mounted intercooler and the relevent hoses to complete the front end then I'll order the zender body kit and Get it into the body shop for the cosmetics. After that its off to get Revo installed and then some Brembo four pot callipers up front and some MK 4 rear discs fitted. Still got a while to go.

have u thought about what gearbox your going to use yet mate?

I have the 1.8T gearbox however it has a hydrolic clutch and a rod change gear selector which is a lot of extra work. I am thinking of a Mk3 GTI gearbox as the ratios are the same but it utilises the original cable change shifter and cable clutch which would make the connections easier and wold let me utilise the original master cylinder. However a hybrid clutch and flywheel would be needed. But on the other hand I would'nt mind a six speed bow from a Lupo Gti. Still a long way to go and lots of decisions to be made when I have all the pics and info I will post them on this wbsite but the conversion I expect to cost between £1800.00-£2000.00 including engine gearbox and other tuning goodies.

I know a fella with a cupraR who is using a vr6 clutch and flywheel after changing to a ko4 as the ibiza clutch wasn't up to the job!! needed a bit of lightening while it was off tho!!

And think there is a seat part (old 2.0 beeza cupra??)used that'll let u use original clutch cable but bolts onto the hydraulic operated gearbox, maybe worth a look??

Sounds like your doing a good job in keeping the costs down too!! Nice one!! Keep at it it'll be a weapon once its done!! :D
