Crank sensor failure? common?

basically just wondered how common it is, put 6n2 GTI engine dash etc into my 6n but havent been able to start it, first thoughts were wiring as the engine loom had been cut (by the breakers yard not me) and repaired by me, but all the wiring was spot on, no high resistances or open curcuits etc, checked crank sensor, no 5 volts from E.C.U, cam sensor had ECU voltage so tried to piggy back it to the crank but as soon as it touched the crank sensor pin the 5v went, so the crank sensor was putting the voltage to earth! what a mission, and what greif getting to the sensor, so now waitng for a new one from VW

Im confused.... do you still have the 6N engine in the car and just have the GTI dash? Or do you have the engine as well?
The ECU, Clocks and Key transponder ALL must be present and be coded together for the engine to run! Even if I wanted to put a different set of GTI clocks in my GTI, I would have to get the new clocks coded in so they speak to the ECU and the key transponder....
But yes, the Cam position sensor is known to fail from time to time...

Sensors dont fail often unless they are shorted badly by something.
As dunc said, it wont have a hope of starting if its not coded correctly!

I used to work for VW and now work for AmD technik so i know they need to be coded, and they are, it is a 6n body with 6n2 gti, engine, engine loom, interior loom, dash clocks etc etc

is the starter running, and is it attempting to fire up, or do you get nothing at all.
