Yep you can get the VW single DIN CD unit underneath, would think they are pretty cheap on eBay. The 6 disc single DIN ones are a bit more and can be very temperamental so don't buy one "sold as seen". Have you thought about an iPod connection? They go into the back using the changer interface and could be a better alternative if you put the MP3 player in a cubby hole underneath.

If you want to swap for another type of head unit you can get converters, but to be honest they all look out of place except Nakamichi (v. expensive) and Becker ones.

No point in getting Halfords to fit it unless you trust them. To be honest if you only need a connector then you should be fine yourself, just get the head unit keys off eBay for a couple of quid to get the head unit out.

I just wouldn't bother with aftermarket unless it suited the car. It tends to be a security target and never looks that great, plus the output isn't tailored to factory speakers.

Instead of the CD player you'd have to get an iPod connector where the CD unit would go into the back of the main HU. Not sure you can have a single CD AND the iPod connector. There are plenty of people around to help you step by step if you're a bit wary of DIY-ing it.

No recommendations apart from the Alpine I used to have - always a good reliable choice.

You'll need a VW standard ISO adaptor - Halfords can help, or find out from Halfords and get one off eBay. This will convert your VW wiring to the standard aftermarket ISO wiring. Just plug and play!
