engine problems!!!!

anyone experienced an intermitant problem with the gti polo 2001 where the revs suddenly go up and when you press the accelerator pedal nothing happens like fuel starvation. Then the warning light comes on and the engine cuts out, and takes a few trys to start it again, then when it starts it just runs rough.

Not had this in the polo...
I would suggest taking off the airbox and checking that the throttle body is clean and free from oil and carbon buildup and that there is not an excess amount of oil in the airbox itself...
Then I would get the car plugged into VAG COM ASAP and find out which sensor is buggered.... There are 101 things it could be, but you wont know until you find out what the onboard computer has to say for itself!
