Just thought i'd let everyone know: my gt is now sorted

Been to jbs to have a new VW clutch fitted , and they found out my flywheel was also nackered. one second hand flywheel later and its changing gear like a new car 8)

im not skint, but it was well worth the money to get it sorted, as crunching in every gear doesn't look cool infront of the ladies

Thumbs up to JBS for top work! (can you tell how happy i am !)

Glad you got it fixed. I presume the VW clutch wasnt too expensive.
What was wrong with the flywheel ?

Is it caused by abusing the clutch?

Yknow... lots of revs, riding it too long, burnouts (only in the wet with 45hp... :) ), getting stuck in 3rd, far too many cross city stop-go sprints...

*guilty as charged*

Found that the slipping currently in mine can usually be brought on by three or four quick takeoffs (or, for testing purposes only, one burnout*) after which it will slip like buggery in 3rd and 4th for a bit, before some kind of self adjustment (or maybe just the parts cooling off) kicks in and it actually ends up more crunch-happy than before.

Hmmm.

* which also confirmed my thoughts on the grippiness of each tyre. Locked rear wheels failed to hold it still against 'better' fronts, and the stickier front left pushed it sidewards against the less tready right.

no burnouts or clutch abuse on my behalf...perhaps it was the previous owner

james at JBS said to take it steady for a while, and not to do any burnouts or anything....im sure he didn't believe me when i said i don't do that kinda stuff.....and i hoenstly don't!

It was pretty bad, so it sounds like the clutch plate had scored the flywheel.

Lots of town driving etc and holding the clutch in for long periods will soon ware it down, it depends how the pervious owner drove it.

I changed the clutch in my blue one not after I bought it, at about 118 k which I think was the original so it lasted quite well. It wasn't that bad, just the release bearing was becoming noisy.

Quick tip, I've found in every car I've had (about 15 :? -and I'm only 20!) if it crunches into reverse, stick it into 1st before engaging rev. Even if its come outta 1st, stick it back in, then out then reverse and you'll find it will probably not crunch again! (I think it's to do with little spindles that need to stop before turning the opposite way in reverse, sticking it into 1st slows them right down -from what I can remember reading in some car manual once....) 8)
