Steering "play" 6N2 GTi

Hullo,
There is a certain amount of "play" on the steering of my 6N2 GTi. It doesnt feel as though the movement is coming from very far away, i.e. my suspicion is that the issue lies relatively close to the steering wheel itself, as opposed to CV joints etc.
The problem is at it's worst when the steering wheel is in it's lowest position, which unfortunately is how I like it! A small, single "knock" is also audible when turning the wheel to the right.
Any ideas what it might be? It's really getting on my t**s!
